Mayor Sheila Dixon of Baltimore has been indicted on twelve counts of various corruption and bribery charges, stemming from a long-term relationship she had with a contractor. Funds were funneled towards a shell corporatoin, allegedly, and moneys not accounted for.
Mayor Dixon is very popular in the city, having successfully stabilized several departments that were in flux during the previous administration of Martin O' Malley. The murder rate dropped by nearly 20% last year in the city, trash services are being streamlined, a new and popular recycling program has been implemented, and the police and fire departments are under new and very effective leadership. A federal investigation failed to come up with charges; these arise from a state-level investigation that started after the feds went away.

A lot of people in Baltimore like what Mayor Dixon has done, but the aura of corruption around her may well lead to her downfall. Still, none of the charges seem to be as severe as what had been rumored over the last few months, and she may well survive this round. Councilwoman Helen Holton was also indicted for lesser charges, and the rumor is that she could see up to twelve years in Stripe City. We'll see what happens to pass.

I live in the city and I know she isn't doing what she says she is.  Anyone who lives in the city and I talk to them, don't like her and don't trust her.  This doesn't surprise me at all.

The parents of my students and the staff I work with are split just about 50-50. It's not a surprise at all, but there are some splits - some of the people I've talked with see this as a set-up in part from O'Malley. I don't buy that line, but it's out there.

"Government is not the answer to our problems.  Government is the problem."

It's time for a constitutinal convention; we need a parliamentary government and more open, citizen control at the local level.
